Assessing Kids’ Blogs (Or Not?)

I found this link on Twitter today and I’m so glad I did! I’ve been struggling with the prospect of assessing my students’ blogs and this author validates those concerns and (I think) gives permission NOT to assess them.

I introduced  my third graders to blogging this year and they love it.  Every single one of them is excited on “blog days.”  I feel certain that enthusiasm would wane if I began grading them.  Their spelling and grammar are, well, atrocious, if I’m going to be honest about it.  But they are writing. With enthusiasm. They comment on each other’s blogs and eagerly check for comments on their own blogs.  Guess what that means?  They are READING too.

So, thank you Christina for validating my instincts and giving me permission to just let the kids write for the joy of it.
